Women and Citizens in Action for More Inclusive Societies in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Eastern Europe
Despite advancements since the fall of the USSR, Eastern Europe continues to grapple with significant gender inequalities. These disparities persist in crucial areas such as access to employment, political participation, and reproductive rights. Particularly, Bosnia and Herzegovina stand out due to the persistence of patriarchal norms and gender-based violence, hindering progress towards equality. Historical and socio-economic crises have exacerbated these disparities, impeding women’s full participation in national reconstruction. It is alarming that only 37% of women are active in the labor market in Bosnia and Herzegovina, highlighting the urgency to intervene and reverse this trend.
While progress is noted, persistent socio-economic challenges in the country require collective action aimed at promoting gender equality and fostering women’s empowerment dynamics in the region. It is to address these issues that Empow’Her has designed the Towards Equality project (Women and citizens in action for more inclusive societies in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Eastern Europe) in partnership with the association Zene Za Zene International.

Empow’Her plays a central role in the overall coordination of the project. Its commitment translates into close collaboration with the local partner, ensuring the quality of each stage of the process. Operationally, Empow’Her is responsible for designing the support program, collecting and analyzing data to develop recommendations for gender equality in Eastern Europe, and creating regional alliances to promote gender equality.
The project, funded by the French Agency for development and the L’Oréal Foundation, is in partnership with Zene Za Zene International (ZZI).
