Project for the Emergence of a Sustainable Entrepreneurship Network in Niger for the Economic and Social Empowerment of Women
The “PERENIA” project in collaboration with AFD
Women have always played an important but precarious role in agricultural production systems, a precarious position that has been exacerbated by climate change, of which they are the first victims.
PERENIA is a project run by Empow’Her with the support of AFD to help women develop sustainable agriculture. To give them the opportunity to take charge of their own economic development, but also to make a positive contribution to the fight against climate change.
Our main mission is to offer women capacity-building and entrepreneurship training programmes so that they can become self-sufficient through their projects.
But as we developed a holistic approach to empowerment and saw the deep-rooted gender inequalities, we realised that it was crucial to implement our mission through a number of tactics to engage a wider range of stakeholders and transform the entrepreneurship sector as a whole into a more inclusive ecosystem.

A PAINFUL LACK OF ACCESS TO SOCIO-ECONOMIC RIGHTS AND THEREFORE TO RESOURCES
In Niger, 80% of the population lives from agriculture and 60% of agricultural workers in West Africa are women (UNW, 2018). Among these women, there is a flagrant lack of access to socio-economic rights and therefore to resources. In fact, only 13% of owners of agricultural land are women (and they account for just 3% of those with access to developed plots).
GREATER INSECURITY FOR WOMEN IN RURAL AREAS
73% of people living below the poverty line in Niger are women, a situation that is exacerbated for those living in rural areas.
FARMING PRACTICES THAT HAVE A NEGATIVE IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT
75% of the women interviewed as part of our previous diagnostics admitted to using unsustainable production practices (monocultures, exclusive use of chemical fertilisers, etc.).
The PERENIA project aims to strengthen the integration and place of women within agricultural value chains and to enable recognition of the crucial role that women play in agriculture.
The project responds to specific needs identified by women throughout the agricultural value chain, and in particular enables women farmers and agro-entrepreneurs :
1# 1# sustainable access to developed farmland suitable for agricultural activities
2# create their own income-generating activity through an entrepreneurial project
entrepreneurial opportunity
3# enhance their agro-ecological skills and their role in the entire agricultural value chain
4# be made aware of the risks of climate change and the impact on their activities and communities
activities and communities
5# to take part in the activities of local networks for the empowerment and rights of women in Niger (including sustainable access to land)
women in Niger (including sustainable access to land)
ACTIVITIES FOR WOMEN FARMERS
Women farmers (producers, processors, merchants) and agro-entrepreneurs have the opportunity to take part in a support program tailored to their needs : from sustainable access to farmland, to strengthening the basics of entrepreneurship and agro-ecology, to the integration of an incubation program lasting several months to launch a business in the agri-food sector.
OUR WORK WITH LOCAL COMMUNITIES AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC
Empow’Her is implementing an innovative approach to strengthen the impact of the project. Several initiatives aimed at local communities and the general public are being deployed :
1# Lead farmer ambassadors to raise awareness and empower women in their communities
2# A network of trainers to deploy our actions and reach the most marginalised areas and beneficiaries
3# Discussion forums and awareness-raising initiatives in local communities
4#Garden schools, places for experimentation and training in each locality
8,000 women farmers trained
15 agro-entrepreneurs supported
1 network of 40 ambassadors for agro-ecological practices
1 network of 50 entrepreneurial trainers
